Post-treatment care : Oral Surgery
If you received a simple tooth extraction, an impacted tooth removal or any other more complexed surgery, here’s some useful tips that you can apply at home that will help you diminish or maybe avoid postoperative complications.
Gently bit into cotton compresses constantly during 45 minutes. If you see that you’re still bleeding after that time, add more compresses and repeat for another 45 minutes. Be warned that a little bleeding is perfectly normal after a surgery. Don’t worry if your saliva is red. Please avoid rinsing or spitting. Also, try to keep your head higher than the rest of your body when you lie down. This helps to reduce the bleeding and the inflammation.
Following a surgery, it is normal to feel a certain discomfort during 24 to 48 hours. The level of pain will vary from one person to another and also according to the type of surgery that you received. To relieve the pain, you should at least take the prescribed analgesics during the first 24 hours following the procedure. If you don’t feel the need to continue the medication after that time, you can use less powerful pain reliever, but avoid aspirin.
If you have an antibiotic prescription, you must take all of it to fight the infection.
A surgery usually causes swelling. To prevent this or to diminish it, it is recommended to apply ice cubes coated in a humid towel as soon as possible after the surgery. Never apply more than 15 minutes every hour and only during the first 24h following the surgery. It is important that the discomfort does not prevent you from sleeping because it is crucial for your overall recovery.
Following a surgery, it is possible that jaw’s movements are a little bit painful. In certain cases, this sensibility cans last for 7 to 10 days. In that case, avoid contracting your jaw’s muscles. Adapt your diet accordingly during that period: eat soft and cold foods during the first days and gradually incorporate solids aliments. After the first 24 hours, once there are no more bleeding, you should rinse your mouth 5 to 6 times a day with salted water (1 tea spoon in 1 cup of water).
Brush your teeth normally but be very careful around the healing region that could be irritated. Smoke slows down the healing process, so don’t smoke during at least the first 24 hours following the surgery. If the pain and the bleeding continue after 24 hours, please call us to book an appointment with a dentist at Zini Dental Clinic.
